Linking, drivers, networking, HTML, icons, PDF, TCP/IP. If any of these are just words and unknown phrases to you, welcome to the world of computers. Some of these are common terms used daily by computer savvy people all over. Many people take courses offered at colleges or universities. Some learn the hard way, trial and error. Mostly the error part.
You can get free information and classes on the internet about your computer, the internet and other computer related topics.
There is a world of free information on the internet just begging for you to find it. That is what I am going to help you with.
For those that are unsure of all the things going on with their computer and are afraid to delve into the unknown, you are not alone. It can be a scary world and with the rising cost of computers and the even worse cost of repairs, you need help. You can get that help.
First I'll give some sites that you can click on with your mouse. The highlighted parts below will take your browser to another web page. Here you will be able to see the things I am talking about. Just follow along with me and you will be able to see all the places that the free information is waiting for you.
Some of these sites require you to sign up with your e-mail address. You may receive e-mail from them regarding the courses or other things related to their site. They all advertise that they are free courses but some do offer other courses that you have to pay for. I am only going to show you the free ones and if you wish to pay for any further, you may. I am simply warning you ahead of time that you may need to give out your address and may receive mail from them.
Some sites have what are known as tutorials and others have online classes.
Tutorials are step by step instructions that lead you along in doing different things on your computer. For example a tutorial on very basic computer use would start you out at turning on power for your computer and then telling you and showing you with pictures the desktop and maybe explaining what you see as your computer starts up. It would then tell you what you see on your desk top and describe what a desktop is, Then it would explain what the icons on the desktop are and what they are for.
On line classes are just like a college or high school course where you read and do the things they tell you to do and then give you home work and even quizzes. Some of the free ones will have instructors that monitor the course and are there for you to ask questions. This is done either through a chat room or e-mail. Each course will give specific instructions for this.
The first is GFC, Global Learning Center.
http://www.gcflearnfree.org/
Their home page explains they offer free courses that are paid by donations. They have both tutorials and online courses led by instructors. You need to sign up and then can register for the tutorials which are self paced courses on things from basic computer skills to programs that you may have with your computer. They also have some tutorials on internet and e-mail use.
They offer some courses on specific programs for your computer if you have them. Their courses are instructor led and you have homework and even discussions to help you.
Free-ed.net

If you have some more specific questions or problems that you need some answers to you can try a few of these sites.
About.com has many answers to questions that people have asked about.
http://about.com/compute/
Ask Jeeves is also a good resource for your questions. You can search for things others have gotten an answer to or ask yourself.

Little painted paper mache boxes are one of the best handmade gifts around. Not only can you fill them with simple goodies, the recipient can keep the box for storage later. Fill this adorable vintage floral shamrock box with chocolate mint patties and give to someone you care about this March 17th!
For this project, you will need:
- One small unpainted paper mache box with a lid
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Emerald Green
- Craft Knife
- Self healing mat
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Shamrock shaped stencil
- Flair Designs “Fresh From The Vine” Print Scrapbook Paper (found in stores or online at Paper Addict)
- Dark brown colored paper
- Elmer's glue stick
- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
- Sponge brush
- Paper towels
- Acrylic finishing spray
- Newspaper or drop cloth
In any project that involves spray paints and/or glues, it is imperative that your work area be well ventilated and covered with newspaper or a drop cloth. Not only is it far better for your health (no breathing fumes!) it makes cleanup much easier.
Remove the lid from the paper mache box. Spray the inside and the outside of the box completely with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Repeat this process with the lid. Let the primer dry for about an hour before continuing.
Again making sure to get an even coat on both the inside and the outside of the paper mache box, paint the box using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Emerald Green. Repeat this same step with the box lid. Allow the paint to dry for a half an hour, or until no longer tacky.
Use the ruler to measure the exact size of the box lid. Transfer the exact size and shape of the lid to the dark brown colored paper with pencil. Lay the paper on the self healing mat and cut it out using the craft knife.
Place the Flair Designs “Fresh From The Vine” Print Scrapbook Paper flat on the self healing mat. Use the pencil and the shamrock shape to transfer the image to the paper. Cut out the shamrock shape from the print paper. Adhere the shamrock to the dark brown paper shape. Let the glue dry.
Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the lid of the box. Adhere the dark brown and shamrock shape to the lid. Smooth away any bubbles under the paper with your fingers, and wipe away any excess decoupage medium with a damp paper towel. Allow the box lid to dry completely.
Spray the entire project with acrylic finishing spray. Dry overnight before using.

Like the bud of a flower,
Our love was young and new.
It was lovely and lively,
With each day it grew.
Blossomed and developed,
So strong and true,
We blended together,
Right for each other, we knew.
As we aged and withered,
Our stems stayed strong.
Falling petals tossed with the wind,
Yet our hearts stayed where they belonged.

Back in the 90's, PC gamers like me didn't use Windows for gaming. In the first half of the 90's Windows wasn't really worth using, and for much of the second half it didn't have many good games anyhow. So instead of using Microsoft Windows' clumsy, industrial gray interface, which always seemed to run like molasses, we'd boot into MS/DOS … Microsoft's original Disk Operating System, and its world of white text on a solid black screen. From there, it was just a few quick keyboard commands to get our favorite games up and running.
It wasn't easy sometimes. Sometimes we had to make “boot disks” with simplified loading instructions, to keep from loading too many things into the 640k of memory that DOS could access. Everything had to run in those 640k … mouse driver, CD/ROM driver, and sound card driver. And configuring sound cards wasn't easy, since there were so many kinds and they all worked differently. So for every game we installed, we had to select the right make and model of sound card, tell it our “IRQ” and “DMA” and then listen to audio tests. And we had to do it twice, once for music and once for sound effects.
It's not quite as difficult now! Nowadays, if you want to play older DOS games, you can use an emulator like DOSBox — available for Macs, and Windows and Linux PCs. And if you follow their step-by-step instructions, you can get your games up and running in no time, and even create desktop shortcuts that you can just double-click to start playing.
Why would you want to do that? Because some of those games are amazing! They were amazing back then, and they're still amazing today. Now you can download the shareware demos in seconds, and sometimes the original authors have even made the full versions available for free. That's hours and hours of serious gaming, and don't tell me it's not worth your time … handheld game consoles like the GBA and Nintendo DS have made retro cool again. This is like that, except on your PC or Mac.
You're probably familiar with some of the more popular games made back during that time, like the violent and controversial first-person shooters. But in my opinion, the best games were made by a company called Epic Megagames, before they changed their name to just “Epic Games” and started making their own controversial games. Here are my two favorites, and at the end you'll find links where you can legally download the full versions for free.
Tyrian
Before downloading the shareware demo of Tyrian, I thought the best top-down shooter ever was Raiden II, with its earthshaking explosions and unique plasma laser. After downloading the shareware demo of Tyrian, I practically didn't need any other game for months. It was that good.
Tyrian's basic concept is the same as other top-down shooters, but it just has so much more packed into it. It has a long story mode with hilarious dialogue, and a shop with seemingly endless customization options. And it has a unique two-player mode, where one player's ship can dock into the other and that player can then control a gun turret.
Each time you beat Tyrian's arcade mode, you unlocked a new ship; up to the “Foodship 9,” which looked like a carrot and was billed as the best edible starfighter ever. Beating arcade mode with the Foodship 9 unlocked a secret two-player minigame that was a clone of Scorched Earth, and was hours and hours of fun.
One Must Fall 2097
My parents wouldn't let me play Mortal Kombat or even Street Fighter II. When I found out that Epic had made a fighting game that involved robots instead of human beings, though, they let me play it instead. And pretty soon, I realized that it wasn't just a “consolation prize” … it was, in fact, leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, even the arcade games I'd spent hours watching.
One Must Fall 2097 included two modes of play: An arcade mode with an immersive storyline, and a tournament mode where you bought add-ons for your 90-foot-tall robot and customized the paint job, or even bought a whole new chassis. Either one had almost infinite replay value, and you could even play two-player matches using your personal robots.
About the only thing “OMF” didn't have was arenas that went on past a single screen. But the ones that it did have had all kinds of environmental hazards, from spikes to electrified walls to jet fighters strafing the robots. And the robots themselves had all kinds of crazy special attacks, from swinging chains to plasma cannons to shadow duplicates. There was no blood at all, but the sounds of metallic impacts could shake the floor, and debris would go flying … especially when you used a “scrap” or “destruction” finishing move.
The Upshot
These games were amazing back then, and they still are today. And you can download the full versions for free from the following websites: Tyrian can be downloaded here, and One Must Fall 2097 can be downloaded here. Both games have been made available for free by the original creators, and are as far as I know 100% legal to download.
In order to play these games on a modern Mac, or a Windows or Linux PC, you're going to need to install DOSBox. If you're using a modern version of Linux, like Ubuntu, you can probably find it by clicking on Adept or Add/Remove Programs and doing a search for DOSBox. Otherwise, go here to download the version you need for the kind of computer you're using.
You can find instructions on how to use DOSBox here. And it might take a bit of figuring out at first, but like I said, you can create desktop shortcuts which will allow you to play your favorite games without having to type things in. You kids have it so much easier than we did in my day!
Have fun!

Magnificent food, nice decor, lots of laughter and beautiful flowers are the words very well to describe an evening spent with Ken Knepp, co-owner and president of West View Florist in Elkhart, Indiana, and his friend Roger Swisher, cooking and catering. I have asked Ken to interview last Christmas at home business is open when I heard the pieces of the story of how he became a florist. As I was intoxicated with perfume store a pleasant and wonderful Christmas decorations, the story fascinated, and I want to learn more.Ken start a business back in 1976 with a current partner, then wife, but not the first time in the flower business. Ken was born the son of a preacher in Kokomo, Indiana, and lived there until she was sitting in class 4. Her mother, a wife of a minister-efficient, will save the ribbons from flowers, iron them and pack them. After the service the majority of interest will go to waste, but not while Ken around. He would rummage through her mother's tape is stored and rearrange the flowers with the added touch of Mom's collection. I think it has an eye for design is something you are born with and curious mind and a creative streak is something that only a loving parent can nurture and help to develop. Develop it. Ken got his first job at a local nursery while still in high school, but he continues to things bigger and better. After high school he worked full time and seen many changes in the flower industry. Flowers last longer because of technology and delivery methods. How to present their flower shop has been enhanced by the tube to hold the flowers in place and no wires. During our fancy dinner with meat so tender fork successfully flake, Ken talked about the changes in shipping today and changes in the overall market. refrigeration truck carrying flowers to their destination at a temperature slightly above freezing. They come to dehydration and need to have a flower stem is cut short so that it can rehydrate them. Flowers that have become increasingly more popular is the daisy pom-pom pom-pom and mums.I Ken asked if the online company hurt its business. He said that it is just doing a little. Buying direct interest to have the problem of too many average people who just want a birthday gift. First of all, they want that day. To overcome the problem of West View Florist have a list of emails and information about each client. Just before the anniversary, the client will be notified via email that they are better for the gift shop. No loyal clients miss a birthday or anniversary. Most online companies do not offer such services. Another problem with direct buying interest is flower arrangement, I guess I should say lack of regulation, the possibility of a bug since the interest is not cleaned, thorns, and even worse is that the company actually responsible for the delivery of flowers' freshness. If your roses sitting in the terminal for a while or at the back of their truck would not arrive in time or in good condition. Grocery stores are carrying a bouquet of flowers and "Basement Bettys" who do silk wedding flower arrangements in addition to taking some of his business. While chain stores big enough to get cheaper rates than independent shops that could dream of attaining, flower arrangement is not anywhere close to that produced Ken. I can testify to that. I have seen many or arrangements have been made and he can say they really work art.One most unusual part of the business is the fact that approximately 40% of business is gift items. Walking through the store intoxicating fragrance is easy to see why. He has some gift items which most unusual and charming. He was carrying Vera Bradley bags and is one of the first in the region to recognize the attractiveness and beauty. There are pieces of hand made jewelry and home decor an attractive addition. Last trip to the store is a great journey for me because I found a fountain that I always wanted in my home. No, this is not a roman statue pouring water from a jar but a small piece of a geode with a crystal ball out of the water that flows though. Small and delicate, this fountain right at the next table woven bamboo plants that Mike has for me, also in West View Florist. Sometimes the gifts become more. They became part of the art set. I've seen some beautiful creations of Ken 'throw together'. These are his words not mine. He knows the client base and when he saw something in the region the perfect gift for that person, he worked to their settings, knowing that the gift giver will get all the credit. When I asked Ken who is the best holiday for business, he did not take long to answer and decorate on top. Christmas is the best for business and busy month long season, Mother's Day is a week long and Valentine's Day is only about two days worth of craziness. I thought it was interesting that some people buy things in other places but came to the West Look at a flower shop and bought a box to put it in before giving it to the recipient. Is that true sense of the bait and switch when it comes to Ken get love? A lot of merchandise buying trips to trade shows in Chicago, Illinois and Atlanta, Georgia. Both showed great take each weekend and do not care how fast you are buying and walked to the next area, it's so big you can not see everything. It's like Disneyland for a flower shop. When I think of flowers, I like wedding pictures, birthday and holiday gifts for any one individual, but Ken does not limit his work only individuals, he also conducted a series of extraordinary interest that you see in commercial buildings. Elements of good interior design business-teaching myself and learning from trade shows and magazines. He and his ex-wife designed and built their own homes. He could see the space and the image just the right touch to make it more elegant, funny, warm, or blinding. Her house has interesting and dramatic pieces that all blend together into a symphony for the eyes. He uses the same talent to make great and beautiful setting to the lobby and offices. Questions still remain natural or maintain. Is this a gift that Ken was born with or just come because he was a boy with time on their hands and flowers in the church? I have to believe that the answer lies in Ken's life motto: "Always love what you do." It does not maintain, nor natural. That's passion.
