World of Warcraft gold breaks down into its smaller counterparts; silver and copper. 100 copper make 1 silver, and 100 silver make 1 gold.
In lower levels copper is sufficient, but as your progress you will need larger amounts of silver, and then gold, to buy items, repair gear, receive class training, and other actions similar to real life.
The best way to earn gold in World of Warcraft is through professions. Every character can train for First Aid, Cooking, and Fishing, but the fun comes at level 10 when you can train for two main professions as well.
First Aid will allow your character, or toon, to make bandages. As your skill progresses in the profession, your bandages will heal you for more damage than the previous. These bandages are lifesavers in many instances. Furthermore, if your toon has not yet leveled cooking up to coincide with your toon level, they can save a large amount of money that would be spent buying food to regain health.
Otherwise, turning cloth into bandages and selling them to vendors, or on the Auction House, will bring in some WoW currency. A little currency to start out with, but later a large amount with the better, heavier bandages. The cloth is picked up in drops from everyday quests and routines by looting your fallen enemy.
Cooking also works by using items (food) that you will lot from fallen enemies during everyday normal play and questing. As your cooking and toon level progress, you progress your cooking. If you do not need all the food you cook for health restoration, you can sell it to vendors. Higher level food sells well on the Auction House or to Raid Groups. Again, gold earned from normal, everyday, easy play.
Fishing is somewhat slow, and boring, but very beneficial. You can sell your catch to vendors, and later as your skill progresses and you catch better fish, you can sell on the Auction House. Furthermore, the fish you catch can often be used for cooking recipes. Hence, leveling your fishing and cooking quickly to get the better levels, better recipes, better fish, and more gold.
On to major professions. Your toon will get to choose two major professions beyond the previous three. All professions, skinning, tailoring, mining, jewelcrafting, herbalism, enchanting, alchemy, engineering, leatherworking, and blacksmithing are moneymakers. Each profession will work hand-in-hand with another profession as well.
Lets examine my Blood Elf Paladin's professions. She is a miner and a jewelcrafter. As a miner, I can prospect the ore I get for gems, make it into bars for use with my jewelcrafting, or sell it on the Auction House for gold. As a level 80 with maxed out mining and jewelcrafting I can make about 20 gold per stack of Saronite Ore, 50 gold per Monarch Topaz or Scarlet Ruby found by prospecting Saronite Ore, and more than 100 gold per Titan Steel Bar I sell on the Auction House.
In about an hour, I can use my cool down for Titan Steel, mine about 30-40 stacks of Saronite, and end up with at least 30 blue (rare) gems to use for jewelcrafting or sell on the Auction House. This translates into about 2000 gold for an hour work, when I sell my treasures that is.
Now for my Blood Elf Death Knight's professions. At level 67, she is an herbalist and an alchemist. Even without being in Northrend, and without flying let alone epic flying, I can farm enough herbs in about 2 hours to make 300-600 gold on the Auction House. Or, I can take some of my farmed herbs and make them into potions and elixirs, to sell on the auction house at a rate of 400-800 gold for the 2 hours of work.
Furthermore, I can use the herbs simply to make potions and elixirs that will help me in battle, such as health potion or battle elixir. I can also make the potions and send them to my lower level toons to help them level with greater ease. When this toon becomes maxed on her professions, she will be able to meet or even beat what my Pally makes per hour or per day as a mining jewelcrafter.
The biggest thing to remember is that World of Warcraft is much like the real world in all senses that matter to an avid gamer. The economy in Azeroth goes up and down. Prices change. A few months ago on my server, I sold gems for 10 gold per piece that I am not getting 40-60 gold per piece for.
In the next few months, I may go back to 10 gold per piece, while the price of herbs may skyrocket and my Death Knight may reap fantastic rewards. No one can tell the economic future of Earth, or Azeroth.
Another way to make gold is to loot everything you can. Why? Even those low level gray items, meaningless gray fangs from animals, can make money. Even if it is a few copper or silver, you are that much closer to your next gold piece. My husband does not loot anything, I loot everything. I sell my treasures to vendors and on the Auction House. Needless to say, I have to send his toon gold sometimes when he needs something.
Gray items are considered 'junk' to the WoW world, but to me, I have made a lot of gold off 'loot all'. White items are valuable to someone, although it may not be you. They can be vendored, or check the Auction House for the same item and see if they are selling.
Green items are uncommon by the WoW world standards, however, they often sell for a decent amount, and the drop rate is pretty good. Blue items are rare and will sell for even more. Most of the time I will put this items on the Auction House before I vendor them. The Auction House will always give you more money in return if a player purchases your items than a vendor anywhere will.
Finally, purple items are Epic items and worth considerably more than any other item you may get from drops. Especially when it comes to heroics, and sometimes even instances on regular difficulty. Do not underestimate the value of purple items, even if they are not for your class.
Remember, you can only sell items that are not soulbound, namely the bind on equip items, on the Auction House. Some rare items will bind to your account, but mostly, they will bind when you put them on. Many dungeons drop items that are bind on pickup, therefore, if you pick it up, you could only wear it or sell it to the vendor.
Professions are by far the best way to earn your WoW currency. Many of your in game kills will have some WoW coin for you, but the real money comes from professions. Once your toon is level 80, do not count out the dailies. You can get better gear, more gold for each completion, and the ever so important reputation.
Mostly, have fun, and enjoy your gold making. Pick two professions that coexist such as mining and jewelcrafting, herbalism and alchemy, skinning and leatherworking, etc. to make the most gold out of your sessions.
There is more to WoW than meets the eye. Everything has a price, and a reward, just like in the real world. Learn your character, research the dungeons, find your rotation, enjoy your professions, and work at it and you will be a World of Warcraft GoldIllionaire.
